Socrates and Jesus

Did you know that Jesus never cracks a joke in the gospels? He never even laughs. I certainly did not and I found it surprising. Laughter and comedy are so integral to the human experience. I'm certain than he did laugh, but why did no one write down his wise cracks?

Is laughing such a sign of weakness and frivolity to detract from the gospel's main character? I don't think so. What's weird is that Socrates cracked jokes all the time. He laughed on his literal death bed when he drank the hemlock. Jesus cried on the cross (okay free pass there, that must've sucked). Bet Jesus cried lots of other times in the gospels as well.

It's weird because Socrates lived and died a few hundred years before Jesus. What happened in that 400 years that made jokes fall out of style?

Life is a joke, death was the punchline. Socrates knew it.
